Cy Dune came out with a desert sun-stained version of The Surfaris’ Wipe Out. It was truly a souped-up version of a timeless classic. Halfway through the set, singer Seth Olinksy made a reference to his previous, and one of my favorite bands, Akron/Family. He talked about how when on tour, presumably before or during their Sub Verses run, they were listening Earth’s Hex; Or Printing In The Infernal Method album. Being a huge fan of Akron/Family it was really cool to get some insight into what they were playing while on the road.
What made this even more special was Dana Janssen from Akron/Family, or Dana Buoy if you are a late-comer, was on drums and you could really feel that electric connection during the set. Then toward the middle of the set two more drummers — one from Antibalas and another whom I can’t remember right now — came out to join the noise fray. I kept thinking, and hoping, Miles Seaton would also appear and there would be not only a super-group version of Akron/Family but also two bass players and multiple drummers.
After the show I spoke briefly with Seth and told him I saw Akron/Family’s show at The Blockley in Philadelphia with Sun Ra Arkestra and Philadelphia’s own horn band. Seth seemed humbled and very happy to hear that…
